Filmmakers Jason Siegel and Jack FitzWilliam set out to capture eagle hunters on the steppe in Kyrgyzstan. What they found was an adventure written in breakdowns, borrowed gear, and unexpected kindness.

Filmmakers Jason Siegel and Jack FitzWilliam set out for Kyrgyzstan with a simple goal: capture the ancient tradition of eagle hunting on the steppe. What unfolded was anything but simple. Over the course of two weeks, they found themselves navigating a packed schedule, rugged terrain, and unfamiliar customs, pushing through car breakdowns, borrowed gear, and the kind of cultural roadblocks you can’t plan for. It wasn’t a survival test so much as a test of resourcefulness, a whirlwind adventure that led them to a fortifying mantra: “If it’s not hard, it’s not worth it.”

Eagle hunter Rinat Mirlanov rests with his golden eagle above the Bokonbayevo village in Kyrgyzstan. Eagle hunting, known as berkutchi in Kyrgyz, is an ancient tradition in the country where hunters train eagles, vultures, and falcons to hunt small prey like foxes and hares. The practice requires years of trust and reliance built between the animal and the hunter. Although eagle hunting today is considered more of a hobby, it was originally used as a means of survival, providing both food and clothing to villagers.
